Why should all development be moved inland?

We must reconsider our approach to cities if we are to successfully combat climate change. Coastal cities are more vulnerable to climate change than inland cities, and their disaster risk profile grows as they expand. Far too many people now live along the coast, which must change because a large portion of our population is vulnerable to storm surges and sea level rises. We now have too much flooding in low-lying areas following heavy rains, and we’re all tired of seeing houses destroyed by coastal erosion after a storm. Climate change is expected to increase the extent, severity, and frequency of coastal flooding and erosion, making coastal areas particularly vulnerable. The sooner we all start moving inland the better we will all be.
