Left Wing Government Careers

The left wing politicians that start full time employment with their party straight after university faces many challenges over the span of their career:

  • Limited real-world business/economic experience.
  • Lack of direct experience with market forces and business operations.
  • May not have experienced personal financial hardship.
  • Often moving from university to political staffing roles to elected positions.
  • Can create a disconnect from everyday economic realities.

As such, they may end up facing economic management experience gaps:

  1. Theoretical vs Practical Knowledge:
    • Academic understanding may not translate to practical economic management.
    • Limited exposure to business cycles, market pressures, or employment challenges.
    • May lack firsthand experience with business operations or investment decisions.
  2. Policy Implementation Understanding:
    • May struggle to understand real-world impacts of policies.
    • Can miss unintended consequences of economic decisions.
    • Limited experience with how policies affect small businesses and workers.

Immigration policy an example of where left wing governance can get tricky:

  1. Complex economic impacts require nuanced understanding
  2. These folk may find it difficult to balance multiple factors:
    1. Labour market needs.
    2. Infrastructure capacity.
    3. Housing availability & What’s involved with building a house.
    4. Social services strain.
    5. True Economic growth (Per Capita Growth Of An Economy).
    6. Existing population pressures.

When things go wrong in this arena, the issue isn’t necessarily tied to left-wing ideology specifically, but rather to the broader challenge of career politicians from any political background lacking diverse professional experience.

I imagine politicians from all parties who have primarily worked in politics may face similar limitations in understanding complex economic management and I think this is why it is so important for pollies to stick their hand up and admit when things are getting a bit beyond their understanding.  There’s plenty of very smart business people around that should be able to lend a hand during the tough times.

I think a More balanced approach for effective left wing government might include:

  1. Gaining private sector experience before entering politics.
  2. Consulting more widely with business and industry.
  3. Better understanding of grassroots economic impacts.
  4. More practical economic training for politicians, provide them with modules or course underwritten by universities.
  5. Greater diversity of professional backgrounds in parliament.

If at times we feel disappointed with left wing government, we need to take a step back and appreciate that the core issue is probably more about professional experience and real-world economic understanding rather than left wing political ideology alone and we should be doing more to make sure people in this space are provided with more training over their careers.
